I took Clomid when I was 31 while being supervised by an RE. (I also had an IUI.) My understanding per my RE was that you will *usually* not ovulate multiple eggs unless you do an HCG trigger shot. Don't take that as gospel obviously, though, because I have known women who took Clomid unmonitored and did not do a trigger so ended up with twins.
I had 9 developing eggs on CD 9 (ovulated about CD 17) and we didn't do another scan. I only got pregnant with one baby. We did NOT do a trigger but did do an IUI. Had a boy. We determined ovulation and IUI timing based on OPK's. I did have bad side effects with it. Clomid made me emotionally unstable. Crying all the time. Irrational. I also was so tender in my abdomen/ovary area that I had a hard time BDing. We actually only ended up BDing one time other than the iui because of it. I have heard of many women having similar symptoms as me in terms of feeling emotionally unstable on Clomid to the point of it being called the "clomid coaster."
I have not done Femara, but have heard there are fewer side effects and a lower chance of multiples.
