What we were in was the Whitney Fire in Washington State.
https://www.krem.com/article/news/lo...5-d3a03be44cc0 We went from thinking we were totally safe, to thinking "hmm maybe the kids and I need to leave" (hubs was staying no matter what) to being "oh ok there are flames coming" in like the span of 20 minutes. (and it was a good thing, too, because if the kids and I had left, we would have been caught on the road and there was nowhere to go in that case)
They never gave an evacuation notice for our area till 2 1/2 hours after it had already hit us. Hubs and the boys fought the fire while Suzy and I cowered in the car with the air conditioner on, in a gravel pit we have that has nothing burnable in it. Somehow, with God's help, they managed to save the house and all our outbuildings but the kids' play equipment, both our hayfields and our entire barbed wire fence are all gone. One of our dogs was burned and so we're caring for her now. But all in all we're incredibly lucky to be alive and still have our possessions. It's heartbreaking what is going on in CA and OR - we don't have trees here, just grasses and sagebrush (and yes, let me tell you, I did find it extremely ironic for a few minutes there thinking my manner of death was actually going to be atomic sagebrush LOL) so while it was a terrible experience, we weren't in that kind of danger thankfully.
