Am I good to go? "Egg health" sway after miscarriage...

So I've been reading tons on egg health (since I am 40) and I don't have a gender preference this time around. I miscarried naturally last week, and doc says no need to wait to try again (no D&C and I AM getting up there in age). Should also note that nuchal fold of baby that was miscarried (I was 12 1/2 weeks, baby measured 11) indicated downs/trisomy 21.

I have been taking 3 - 4 grams of folic acid for the last 6 months. I understand this is THE most important supplement. I started taking it 3 months prior to TTC in July, and hadn't weaned off it when I miscarried. I know you're supposed to take supplements for egg health at least 3 months prior as it takes 90 days for an egg to mature.

So...am I good to go? I've actually been taking FA for the last 6 months. Also been taking prenatal supps for the last 4 months. I've picked up ALA, Resveratrol, CoQ10 and I've been taking RJ/BP all along. Should I wait a few months for the other supps to kick in? I'm so nervous about waiting even 3 months longer given my age. Should I go for it?

I'd go for it asap, bcos you probably won't get pg 1st cycle ( hope I'm wrong tho) so while you're trying the rest of the supps will kick in and you'll get the best eggie ever :luck:

Maybe try red raspberry leaf tea for uterus lining, I'm not sure how much is recommended, I'm planning to take it for my next sway. It is also fertility enhancer.

Also wheatgrass juice or capsules.

ALA is alpha lipoic acid? Is it an antioxidant?

I am so sorry about your m/c. :( I must have missed that news. I remember you had a scare a few weeks ago, but I thought it resolved itself. :(

Thanks ZB. I am taking RRL tea right now, to help with the "after" part of the miscarriage. I've also got wheatgrass juice tablets (although the bottle says to take 21 tablets a day!!!). Yes, ALA is alpha lipoic acid and is supposed to be good for egg health (antioxidant that protects DNA from damage). I'll do whatever it takes...but my medicine cabinet is starting to look like a pharmacy!

You need to TTC starting now because it may take a few cycles for a good egg to show up. A month makes a difference when we're over 40.

What about DHA along with the ALA?

Pycogenol and DHEA are also possibilities that you should look into.

Also, what do you have DH on?

Zivic, the ALA is just one of the essential fatty acids (the kind found in flax and nuts).

I took Red Raspberry Leave Capsules after my M/C because I cannot stand tea! :)

Thanks Atomic, I've been holding my breath until you were able to answer. By "good" egg, do you mean fertilizeable? Seems like the last time around, the egg got fertilized, but it there was a chromosomal abnormality (does that = bad egg?). I'm worried because the LAST thing I want is another miscarriage, I just don't have the time (that sounds heartless, but you KWIM).

I am now taking:
RJ/BP, wheat grass juice caplets (10 a day), krill oil (has DHA and EPA), CoQ10 (but I've got ubiquinol on order), ALA, Maca root, probiotics, vitamin c, vitamin e, zinc, 5000 mcg of FA.

I will check into the pycogenol, but we can't get DHEA in Canada without a prescription. DH is on the CoQ10 (read on article on here somewhere that it ups sperm quality). He's also on krill oil, probiotics vitamins C & E.

Oh, and one more question...I just started with the Maca, wheat grass, ALA and CoQ10 but I've been taking the others all along. So do I still need to wait the 3 months ('til eggs mature)?

No, the fertilization is just step one, I mean an egg that is capable of turning into a nice healthy baby without chromosomal anomalies.

I understand that you don't want to have another loss (and TOTALLY understand about the clock ticking) BUT you have to realize you very well could do nothing and conceive a normal healthy baby next month, or equally possibly, do all this stuff and then still suffer another loss in 6 months despite doing all the supps. Waiting is no guarantee.

I personally do not advise waiting. The older we get, the fewer good eggs we tend to release, so if (just for the sake of argument) you release 3 good eggs this last year, and two of them were back in Feb. and Mar, and the third is going to be this upcoming month, you may end up risking missing that good egg in the hopes of improving egg quality, which we don't even totally know if it's possible for you to do that. Then what if you only release one good egg next year? You don't want to pass up any month trying at age 40 because you never know when you'll get to that last fresh egg in the carton.

Also give DH the folic if there isn't any in his multivitamin and I'd like to see you both on 1000 IU Vit. D thru the winter

That would be on top what's already in Prenatals 400 IU, so 1400IU total?

No, just total of 1000 iu. it's ok to go over a little bit like 1200

Sorry if this has already been posted, I did a search and couldn't find anything...but what happens if you go over the 1000 iu (I mean, a LOT over). I've been taking about 3000 a day for almost a year! Is it possible that this dose might harm a fetus?

I am pregnant now and my dr makes me take 4000iu, so I don't think 3000 is way over the limit

Yes, my doc has me on a higher dose as well...was just wondering because Atomic says it's only okay to go a "bit over" up to 1200...

There is some evidence that very high levels of Vit D can cause birth defects (like, in the tens of thousands of IU) but doctors are revising their beliefs on what level that is, upwards. It's very likely that 3000 is fine and safe. I just keep people about 1000 or so because this is what I took and I like to use myself as a guinea pig when I can. High Doses of Vitamin D May Cut Pregnancy Risks.

Thanks Atomic. Do you think Soy ISO would be an option for me? If I did a 3-7 day protocol (I haven't even got AF since my m/c yet...in fact, my miscarriage isn't even OVER yet, if you KWIM, but that is a whole different story) do you think it would give me "better" eggs?

I like to be super conservative in my advice and stick with things that I feel quite confident are fully safe.

Vit. D can be stored by the body, so you never know if someone is deficient to start with (and could use a higher dose) or are already chock full of the stuff and shouldn't even take it at all.

I am presently on 5000ui of Vit D a day myself. I was severely deficient in May after my m/c (levels were at 13) and was put on 50,000ui a week until I got blood done in August and it was 38 which is still on the low side. I will be rechecked before cycling but best way to determine how much to take is to have blood done and find out what your levels are then ask your dr. how much you should be taking.
As for increasing egg quality, even though the time clock is ticking rapidly at our age, I've found that taking time to get healthy was my best option. It's been 7 months for me and my FSH went down to 6.9, estrogen and progesterone rose to a better level, but I had to start levoxyl for my thyroid. I know waiting sucks and the desire to try again is strong, but believe me, the best medicine is to get healthy. Everything you can do to improve egg quality will actually improve your overall health. I'm technically ready to cycle again, but I won't be pushed into it by a doctor or his team and every time I get blood done, it's improved over the last time. True test will be healthy pregnancy!!! I've been talking to tons of women since March and those who are currently preggers after years of failures were the ones who took the time to be healthy.

The Vit. D situation is entirely different if you have had your blood drawn and are under a doctor's care. I'm talking just in terms of the average gal on the street, the level of Vit. D I feel to be universally safe for pretty much everyone is roundabout 1000 IU or so.

I really really don't want anyone over 36/37 taking 7 months before TTC for any reason. It's one thing if you're going HT and your eggs are literally all in one basket but swayers, I BEG you not to postpone TTC for months at a time because none of this stuff is even proven and you only need ONE good egg, not dozens as are required for HT cycles. Age, on the other hand is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to make a huge difference to fertility and even a few months can be the difference between BFP and BFN.
