Clomid for swaying: more odds of multiples?

I got clomid now, but am still not sure if I have pcos or not. My cycle has suddenly returned to normal again after taking the morning after pill last month: 21 days. I was really hoping that a boost of hormones would work to get my cycle back to normal and it seemed to have worked :highfive: So let's assume now I don't have pcos, I ovulate on my own just fine and I'm taking clomid, would that mean I have more chance of multiples? It seems to make sense, as I pop my own eggs, so with clomid I could pop more?? I would be happy (and worried) with twins, but triplets or more are absolutely terrifying!! They say the odds of twins are about 8% when not ovulating on your own and 1% for triplets, but can't find any data on normal fertile women that are using clomid. What do you girls think?

A few girls who have tried Clomid have gone on to have multiples, however it isn't always the case. It's certainly something to take into consideration before using!

My GP pre-warned me about this...he said it sounds like I'm ovulating on my own (I showed him what I'd tracked on FF) but I should take the clomid to improve my egg quality and hormone production or something like that..but the % is still low for multiples for my situation.

I start next cycle so we shall see!

8% of everyone according to what I was told by a pharmacist. They like to say things on line but this matches up pretty closely with our results. Lots of ladies took Clomid, a few sets of twins. We have also seen more twins with pink sways without Clomid too. Never had a set of triplets.

Most people who do Clomid are actually ovulating on their own, they have unexplained infertility or short LP or long cycles. Very few people who take Clomid as an overall percentage are not ovulating.

People with severe PCOS may be more liikely to have multiples but they are anyway.

Are you taking it as prescribed by a doctor? Are you being monitored??

You should never take clomid unmonitored with PCOS. You familiars with Jon and Kate plus 8?? Clomid babies. All 6 of them.

Monitoring on Clomid is by far the ideal situation and my preference too. :agree:

The problem is that doctors are just handing out Clomid willy nilly without monitoring to people with PCOS and in much higher doses than they should be using. And at the same time are refusing to give it to people who it's medically indicated for (esp. in Europe and the UK) It's a big dilemma!!

I fall I to the category of unmonitored...though I'm not too worried about it at the moment.

I'm sure there must be other factors at play there also. Usually when people have been prescribed clomid it's because they're having trouble conceiving and are probably doing a whole host of other things to improve their fertility and chances of conception alongside the clomid (pre-Natals, fish oils and healthy diets, pre-seed and eating more in general spring to mind) Which I am not doing, not straight off anyway.

But you can never say never can you! It's a gamble. Though probably a lot more riskier for people who take unprescribed clomid. That's whole other can of worms x

there can be all sorts of complications on clomid, including hyperstimulation. why GP's are even allowed to give out clomid without being monitored is beyond me. its just not worth it. its a pretty full on drug and I think too many people are just given it 'just because'. too many GP's think they know what they are doing, when, I'n my opinion, they should be referring to a specialist instead.
oh and just thought id mention that I happen to be one of those small percent that don't actually ovulate. even when my body attempts to, it isn't right. so I thank my lucky stars for clomid :)

If you are acquiring and taking clomid without doctor supervision, that is foolish. If you are PCOS and doing that, that is very foolish.

Girls, if you're doing it it is always at your own risk and it is by far and away better to have it under a doctor's supervison.

BUT be aware that your doctor handing you a prescription for Clomid and sending you on your way is NOT MONITORING. And it is not just GP's that are doing this, it's OB's and RE's too and it is happening in every country. If you have PCOS you should have ultrasound monitoring. If you are taking more than 50 mg you should have ultrasound monitoring.

I'm another one who didn't have any monitoring - in fact my OB who handed over the rx said flat out they don't do that here (in our area) and it's the bigger clinics that do it. I took my chances. I have no idea what or how many I've got cooking yet lol
I took it for swaying but then learned I had a short lp so I was glad I was on it.

I would estimate a solid 70% of ladies are being given Clomid by a doctor with no monitoring. An additional 20% who actually should be given Clomid because it's medically indicated because they have really long cycles or really short LP or both, are being refused for no reason (especially in the UK for some reason). Only 10% of the people who have their doctors monitoring them and it's often at the patient's insistence. :/

I have taken it this cycle (days 2-6, 50mg) and today on CD15, after having my blood test (being monitored) the Dr has rung and told me not to have sex as my Estrogen is too high (over 4000). I am getting an ultrasound done first thing in the morning to see what is happening....
If there are only 2 eggs, does that mean that I will def get twins if I BD tomorrow? (Ovulation due tomorrow). I really don't want twins! Just in case they are both boys!! :nails:

No, it doesn't mean that at all and most doctors who have monitored my swayers have told EVERYONE of whom I am aware of, to go ahead with two eggs. Some docs told people who had 3 eggs to go ahead and TTC. There were only two people who were told not to BD and those were ladies with 4 eggs (and one lady with 4 eggs was told to TTC by her doctor and did not even get pregnant)

Had my ultrasound and there were only 2 eggs, both large and ready to pop. The slightly larger one could of been pumping out extra estrogen so that is where my high numbers could of come from. There was a tiny 3rd one but it was not in the race at all.

What did your dr advice you to do? I think the odds of twins are still slim? Is the estrogen bad for getting pregnant or was your dr alarmed because it means there are too many eggs?

My Dr was surprised that there were only 2 eggs. She said she thought I had about 4 in there. She said to get Bd'ing asap. She didn't say anything about chances of multiples, I kinda forgot to ask... whoops... prob should of thought of that... Fingers crossed only 1 makes it! I didn't add another attempt. She said I could totally get pregnant from my 3 day cut off attempt and that it would be better odds for a girl (I think she believes the timing thing - boys swim fast, girls are slow etc).
So we will see in about another week if it all worked for me! :fingers: :pinksperm:

In addition to the above ^^ she also said that she had not long come back from a fertility conference and that the stats for pregnancy's from a 3 and 2 day cut off was surprisingly high to all the Dr's there. She said it was something like a 70% conception rate for a 3 day cut off and not necessarily too much higher for a day before O attempt - so that made me feel much better as I was worried my attempt was too far out from Ovulation :wink:

Well, please understand that a) that is not what studies have found nor is that my experience on this site or on IG and b) that is without swaying. Swaying changes things and as we all have seen, even just diet can dry up CM a LOT and I really prefer people not have 3 day cutoffs.

1 and 2 days before O are best odds of conception.

That's what I was going to ask, bc with swaying pink we really do reduce fertility a fair degree I think. I agree with atomics timing suggestion. 1-2 days is a safe bet; anything anything intentionally sooner can lead to disappointment unless you have many many cycles of trying ahead of you with no time restraints.

Just be aware still that if you have 2 eggs ready to go,,there is a chance of twins so if u don't want twins I wouldn't have bd. you could ask your doc to change your clomid from days 5-9 you will most likely have less eggs so usually only 1, but it's better quality. So of you don't get pg this month that may be an option too

Well, the fact is that we are seeing people BD with 2-4 follicles (under advice of a doctor) and not getting pregnant with one baby, let alone more. 2 follicles is not a guarantee of twins. I think this is a decision that people should make with their doctor's input because if someone has been TTC for a long time they should probably not skip months for 2 follicles.

We have not seen as good pg rates with CD 5-9 and I feel like we have had twins and singles being conceived on all the days so I am not finding the CD 5-9 idea to be working out.

Maybe that's just coincidence? (The 5-9 clomid not working out?) as I do know it's the preference for all the docs (unless a specific circumstance) at my fertility clinic. I'm not an expert, but just what she told me when I asked

Well, I suppose it could be but at some point I feel after dealing with dozens, if not hundreds of ladies around the entire planet on Clomid that one does start to get a feel for it.

Some fertiliy clinics say 3-7, or 5-9, others even say 2-6. All I can do is share my personal experience which is htat I started out recommending 5-9 because it was supposedly "better for odds of twins" but I saw twins conceived that day, singles conceived days 2-6 and 3-7, did not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, and better odds of conception on 3-7, I'm sticking with 3-7 for now. Ask me agian in a year or two. Maybe I'l have a different opinion then..
