Last pregnancy I had it really bad and had to do insulin shots. Will I most likely have it again? They already have me scheduled to do lab work after a food and drink fast when I am 8 weeks. Last time was so horrible and something I do not want to go through again!
I think you are more at risk of it hun but it isn't a definite. Good you're going to be checked out for it, fingers crossed you get the all clear. xx
Not necessarily, lots of people don't get it in subsequent pregnancies. I even have a few friends who had it with their first pregnancies and not their second.
Nope! I had it my first pregnandy and did not have it again with my next 2 pregnancies. I was shocked b/c I fully expected it each time following. Good luck!
i never bothered getting it checked with my first 2 pregnancies...funny enough everyone assumed i had a natural ability to carry large babies....and being mediterranean assumed i have natural tendency to go from being a petit size 8 8st- to a huge stumpy 12st person whilst pregnant. my babies ranged from 9.7-11lb.
it was only in my 4th pregnancy that the pattern of huge babies was noted and i got a Glucose intolerance test done and it came out boarderline positive. i am not sure how you suffer as i have had it and probably had it with my all my pregnancies but i didn't suffer to such an extent as to fear i never have it again....so i 'm interested to know what you mean it was a nightmare. i have now been diagnosed again and apart from not wanting to gain too much weight and have a huge baby again....i just want to stay as i am now (only gained 2kg so far) and don't mind the daily testing. currently i am only being monitored and will find out if i will need the insulin injections which i had with my last pregnancy.
to answer your question...i think although it is not necessary to have Gestationsl diabetes (Gd)with all pregnancies....i think if yours is severe (and mine isn't) then maybe the ptobability is that your have a tendecy to develop it during pregnacies.....i still managed to have it with all of miy pregnancies...as i am sure i had with my first 2 too as well as despite eating normally i still became huge and so did my babies.....this pregnancy is the only one i have hardly gained and baby seems to be growing normally so far... yet i was diagnosed with Gd anyway....
so if you have a tendency to have it in pregnancy there is a higher chance you will have it again.....but once controlled should not pose any problem to you or baby......it is not a good thing but there are worser scenarios....this is a smaller hassle in comaprison to more serious issue in pregnancy....:)
My problem was more with doctors I think...which is why I have switched to a new OB center. Basically, I went in around 24 weeks or so and I had a ton of sugar show up in my urine. On top of that, every time I ate something sweet, I felt like I was going to pass out, my head would get swirly and I felt AWFUL! I told the doctor about it, he basically ignored what I said and told me to wait for the glucose test. So, I went on feeling horrible, and when I had my glucose test, they told me to fast. So, I fasted and passed my test. They sent me on about my way. Finally, after I was over 30 weeks, I had sugar show up in my urine again. They did a blood test and confirmed I had sugar WAY too high. They made me an appt at the maternal fetal specialist office (which took 2 weeks to get into) and sent me to an endocrinologist. They gave me pills to help with sugar and it did not help. I was basically starving b/c I couldn't eat a lot and I still had issues. Finally they adjusted me to do insulin shots. Which was horrible!!!!!!!! I had to stick myself in the stomach 3 times a day and I am afraid of needles. All the while I racked up over $1000 of out of pocket costs to go to all these doctors that were freaking me out! I had to get weekly u/s done and stress tests. Finally, at 37 weeks they told me he was getting too big and would be over 8 lbs. They said there is a huge risk where they have to break the baby's shoulder sometimes and just really made it sound awful. They told me that if I didn't go into labor by the end of the week that they would have to induce me. Lucky for me, I went into labor that night and he was only 7lbs 7 oz.
They told me that as soon as I delivered, the diabetes would go away too. No such luck! I still had to get insulin shots in the hospital and instead of eating large meals, I had to eat sugar free food. It took almost 3 weeks for my body to get back to normal.
I am so afraid that if I have it again, I won't go back to normal and I will have diabetes forever. And, the crazy thing is that my diet was like this: english muffin w/pb for breakfast, eggs or protein shake for snack, salad with grilled chicken for lunch, rice cakes with pb for snack, chicken for dinner with vegetables, rice cake w/ pb for snack and I still had to take insulin shots to stay normal. IT SUCKED!!!!!
