Folic acid / folate at age 40

My husband and I are going to start trying for our last child.
Could someone please give me the current advice on the amount of folic acid/folate I should be taking in preparation (I am 40 years old).

Also, given this info (and that I have never had a child with any neural tube defects), which form should I use...or does it matter? The current bottle I have is Folic Acid 800 mcg (Walmart’s brand), but I’ll get whatever is recommended!

I would take folate if you can afford it, and I'd do 1600 (so one in the morning and one at night).

I would take that all through the entire first trimester of pregnancy (add your prenatal ONTO that, so you'll end up taking even more) then gradually wean off the folate by spacing doses further and further out till down to the amount in the prenatal.

If you can't afford the folate, the folic is probably fine but the folate is tolerated by everyone while a minority of people can't tolerate folic acid. Whenever it's an option, folate is better in case you are in that minority and we just don't know it yet.
