Hurricane Lee path – where is the storm and how will it affect the UK weather?

HURRICANE LEE has weakened to a tropical depression as it howls across the North Atlantic on course for the UK.

The storm is expected to weaken further as it leaves tropical waters but forecasters have still told Brits to be prepared for strong winds and heavy rain.

What is Hurricane Lee's path and where is it now?

Hurricane Lee was gradually strengthening as it moved across the North Atlantic Ocean south east of Bermuda.

The hurricane was formerly a Category 2 storm and has now weakened to a tropical depression as its path is expected to see it bend east across the Atlantic towards the UK.

As hurricanes move away from warm tropical waters they lose strength rapidly and Lee is expected to be downgraded further.

How will Hurricane Lee affect the UK's weather?

Hurricane Lee has started weakening but there is still the potential for it to impact the UK's weather as it approaches Britain on Sunday October 1.

Lee is expected to arrive along with the remnants of Hurricane Maria, which caused "apocalyptic" devastation in Puerto Rico.

The Met Office said the potential effects will be "far from those experienced in the Caribbean", but told Brits to prepare for very strong winds and heavy rain.

Frank Saunders, duty chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "These systems regularly head towards the UK, especially in autumn.

"They can bring very strong winds and heavy rain, but they are a normal part of our weather."

How do I track Hurricane Lee?

There are a number of ways you can be alerted to severe weather warnings in the UK.

Most people rely on, news sites, radio and TV to find out the latest breaking weather news.

Others go straight to the source and visit the Met Office website, while others sign up to phone apps, RSS and email alerts so they can be notified while they're on the go through push-notifications.

It's always helpful to pass on weather warnings to family and friends by sharing them on FacebookTwitter and other social media to spread the word.

Will Hurricane Lee and Hurricane Maria strike the UK together?

Britain could face a weather double-whammy from the tail ends of Hurricane Lee and Maria this weekend.

Winds of up to 60mph and up to 100mm of rain are expected, triggering flood warnings.

On Saturday the leftover of Hurricane Lee will be unleashed, followed by Hurricane Maria on Sunday.

A month's worth of rain could fall in some areas.

The Met Office said usual rain for this time of year would be "made a bit heavier by the remnants of Lee and Maria."

But forecaster Nicky Maxey said: "We're not going to see anything like we did in the Caribbean."

The western half of the UK could see flooding. The Environment Agency said it will issue "alerts and warnings as needed".
