This popped up on my facebook. Is there anything to this? I mean, that's not anything that anyone could possibly control....but I'm curious.

I've never heard of this, but after reading the article it boils down to maternal condition. Generally, a person with lower blood pressure is on the dehydrated side, and by dehydrated I don't simply mean lack of water. In order to be properly hydrated you need proper mineral balance which comes from a a nutrient dense diet.
Also, a person with lower blood pressure often has other health issues like endocrine problems, severe allergies, heart problems or other issues. So in other words, lower overall health.
The focus should not be on one single thing that can sway or not, but rather, the entire person's lifestyle and history needs to be taken into consideration. Most of the girl swaying advice like cardio, lower mineral content and lower nutrition density, would indeed lower blood pressure a bit *but not by much*, notice that the article only speaks of a very small difference in the groups.
I have monitored my heart rate for almost 2 years straight and can see when my system has slowed down or sped up due to dieting, exercise, fasting and thyroid hormone. It's pretty neat actually
There's alot more to this of course, just thought I'd drop my two pesos worth.

then again, please see the averages, 113 vs. 110 - those are both darn low blood pressures. I know it's an average and all but these teeny tiny differences are completely useless for telling us anything really.

Blood Pressure predicts sex?
I'm not inclined to believe this to be true. I had low BP before conceiving DS1 and throughout my pregnancy. I'm talking the highest it ever was was 98/65! Even my pulse was low! He is very much a boy. I was very active, had a traditional HE diet and was at a low weight for my height.

Haha, oh great, yet another thing to worry about!
But really, I am reaaaaally raising my eyebrows at this study. BP 26 weeks in advance? I mean...what? And the differences between the average BPs was so, so small. I feel like this study really would be a classic misdirection, in that something else had a much stronger positive correlation but got missed.
Anecdotally, however -- my BP was actually normal bordering high before my DD, with a high heartrate. My BP was very, very low in pregnancy and after, but definitely not prior. I can think examples of BP of those around me who got either.
If I were to even consider this at all, I WOULD think it's funny that high sodium diet is the old school boy swaying, considering high sodium can contribute to high BP in those who have a genetic tendency towards high BP? But I mean, both are... so unsubstantiated. Just a thought to mull over haha.

Thin people who eat healthier - vegetarian, less meat, lower cals, less fat have lower blood pressure. I would betcha that is all it is (if not just a statistical variation) Another possibility is higher strung people have higher blood pressures. I know I often get very tense before going to the doctor and have "white coat hypertension" where my BP is higher than it would be normally.
113 vs. 110 is not the kind of difference that is screaming "high sodium diet". If this was something like 140 vs. 100 then yeah that's a huge difference. I understand how averages work, but 3 % points of blood pressure??? I would be embarrassed to publish that study to be honest.
this is one of those things with swaying where you have to look beyond that knee jerk "cause-effect" reaction. This does not mean you should start eating a bunch of salt to make your BP rise, for goodness' sake.!!! Questions??Check out the NEW and improved Complete Index !!!
