So, I'm only 5 and a half weeks, but wondering about the whole nub guessing thing for the 12 week scan.
What did you ask for specifically? Would a sonographer know about the 'nub shot' or just look really blank? I haven't done much reading around it yet, other than what is on this site.
Do I need to ask for a 'nub shot' at the 12 week scan? Or will the sonographer look at me like I'm a crazed woman?
Any experiences or information really appreciated - thank you.

I know I never knew about nub theory for my three boys and since learning about it I have looked at all my ultrasounds and not one single nub! I know I did ask with my third If she could see the sex and she looked at me as if I were crazy lol saying it is impossible to tell at that point... Maybe there are a lot of techs that have no idea about nub theory

I think it depends who you get - I didn't ask as was worried made me look like I only cared about the gender and not about the health of the baby. They did say if they guessed it would only be 50/50 but think they may have to say that.

you can ask but most won't try and do it... the one I had with my last scan did her best to get me the nub shot and was interested in hearing about the theory, but when I've asked earlier ones about the Ramzi theory they have absolutely refused to cooperate, presumably in case they tell me what I don't want to hear and abort

I have not found NHS techs very friendly about this to be honest a nub shot is more of a fluke if you get one. You may get lucky and get a nice tech or you could pay and go private (they will usually give you what you want as you are paying) and most will give you a good tech's guess at 12 weeks.
The NHS are mostly anti really early gender determination, i think because a lot of people will use it as a way to abort unwanted babies and there is a fair bit of that in the uk. I think most techs worth their sort would know about the nub theory (kinda like you working in maccys and asking for a veggie burger, they don't do them but its well known in the catering industry so they'd know what you mean) but its unlikely they will tell you anything.
Good luck though, if you look during the scan you can usually see a nub yourself which is more accurate (if you know what to look for) than a still image

Thanks all for posting.
I am going to also get DH to read up about it all, so there will be two pairs of eyes looking! I might test the water and just ask about it quite casually and see how they respond.

Where in the uk are you hun? I find it various a lot hospital to hospital.
What I did was ask for a photo, then ask for a look at the photo before they print it, and it had no nub shot so I asked if she could get a better shot of the baby, like lying longways so people could tell what it was (I've seen some terrible nhs 12 week shots of the back of baby's heads and stuff, the first photo wasnt that bad but it was pretty crap!!!) and they looked irritated but did what I asked, and after 3 tries (by which point she looked like she wanted to murder me LOL) I actually got lucky and got a partial nub shot, to which I said it was perfect thank you and made a hasty exit!

Theres no harm in asking, hopefully you'll get a good tech but if not that two pair of eyes are a great idea. I never thought about that, my dh got really good at spotting faint bfp lines after all the time i spent on here looking at everyone elses tests. Sit him down with the confirmed shots section!
