It's not been Peer reviewed yet so I'm not sure quite how accurate the study is, but it's making me wonder if I should drop down from my 1600mcg per day of folic acid?!

I think it's related to the MTHFR mutation actually. I had genetic testing done on myself, DH, and my kids a year ago and we all have the MTHFR mutation. Having this mutation, especially being homozygous, is already linked to having an increased risk of having a child with autism, down syndrome, ADHD, etc as well as increased risk of repeat miscarriages, blood clots, and stroke. People with the MTHFR mutation cannot process synthetic b vitamins, so instead of them being excreted in the urine like most people that get too much, it builds up in the blood****** instead. I get blood draws every 3 months and had high levels of folate and B12. Those with the MTHFR mutation have to take methyl B vitamins and avoid synthetic B vitamins in supplements and fortified foods (anything containing flour). I switched from taking regular synthetic folic acid to methyl folate and avoid gluten and grains for the most part. My B12 numbers were finally in the normal range (~800) at my last blood test 2 weeks ago. Before that they were 1200, which is high. So my guess, is that women with high B vitamin levels during pregnancy are at increased risk for having a child with autism but it's not because of the b vitamins themselves, it's because of the MTHFR mutation the causes a buildup of these vitamin. People with the MTHFR mutation also do not process heavy metals and other toxins as well either and should avoid fluoride, etc. My son also had a reaction to his DTaP vaccine and I bet kids with the MTHFR mutation are at highest risk for vaccine reactions. There's been a few studies, involving the smallpox vaccine, that said this was true-- that yes, people with the MTHFR mutation suffered more adverse reactions after vaccination compared to those without the mutation. I wish they would do more studies on this with current vaccines. My son's reaction was most likely due to the aluminum in the vaccine.

The study was in people with very high levels in their blood at the time of their child's birth. NOT preconception or in the first trimester. And there was no data indicating that these women were taking massive doses of supplements, rather that their bodies were not excreting it properly for some reason (agree totally with essnce that MTHFR is likely the culprit.)

I agree I wish they'd do more studies. They spend so much money doing studies on such asinine things you'd think they could free up a few $ for that. :/
