Help with weaning folic please !

    Ladies I need help

I've asked atomic but she seems really busy lately so hoping someone else can share their knowledge.

When I'm pregnant I get so worked up about things. And currently this is worrying me. Can any of you please explain exactly how I should wean off folic acid and metformin in detail ?

    I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant.

    So I take In morning

    Metformin 850 mg
    Follic 0.5 mg
    Preg vitamin
    Vitamin d
    Iron

    In afternoon I take
    Metformin 850 mg
    Folic 0.5mg
Preg vitamin ( the dose is twice a day )

How do I wean off metformin and folic ? Should I do at same time or should I pick one first then do other ?

I was thinking skip the afternoon dose for both every second day for a week. Then every third day for a week ? Then what ?? I actually need it to be really clear I can't get my mind around this. I don't know how it eventually gets to none and then I start skipping the first. Am I missing something obvious because it seems too hard to understand how to space it out.

I also want to stop the iron because I think my levels are up to normal again. Do I just stop or do I wean again ?

So confused. Please help. Can you tell me exactly how to space it out.

Thanks so much. I'm worrying over this so much now.

Continue folic acid at present dose till the end of the first trimester and then gradually wean off by spacing doses further and further out, till down to the amount in prenatal and that you should continue with.

To further break this down based specifically on what YOU are taking (everyone else, this advice would not necessarily work for you) what you'd do is take the second dose of folic every other day for a few days, then drop it totally. You don't have to wean as slow as another person, since you're already taking it elsewhere. Then, start off with the additional dose. On this one, go more slowly, start off doing every other day and do that for a few days, then go to every 2, then 3, then 4, till down to one per week and then just continue the prenatal. The whole process should take about 3 weeks start to finish so that gives you something of a timeline.

Metformin, please get your doctor's input. Metformin at this stage of pregnancy is beyond my pay grade. But if they do want you to come off it and say to drop all of a sudden I do think it is best and safest to wean off. Doesn't hurt anything to wean off, and may help your body to adjust.

The body is more forgiving of iron since it does store it, but there's no harm in weaning off so I'd just go to every other day, then two, then three, but you don't ahve to go as slow as with the folic and you could be off it in about 2 weeks.

Thanks atomic, I appreciate your response.

I've made my self a little time table because there is no way I could keep up otherwise. For the life of me I can't do the folic weaning in 3 weeks though. Just the stage of every 4,5 and 6 days is 2.5 weeks on its own. I can do it over 5 weeks ? But by then I'll be 18 weeks pregnant. It doesn't sound right does it ? And weaning off iron and folic at the same time, do you think that will be ok ?

Ah man so sorry for over complicating something that is so easy. I'm so scared of ruining something I'm so close to having now you know. Like I get to have a daughter now and I'm so scared it's going to be taken away from me.

Ob is happy for me to stop metformin cold turkey. He didn't even think I needed to take it but I was convinced I miscarried the previous one because I was advised to stop when pregnant and lost the baby a week later so he just said stop after first trimester to make me feel comfortable about it with this one.

There is no need for it to go that slowly. It's fairly important to come off the folic because taking it further into pregnancy may cause other issues such as asthma and possibly autism.

I understand why you're concerned but I have gone through this weaning process with hundreds of people and the ONLY people who had any issue that seemed related were those who dropped it suddenly (and even then who knows if it even did anything or if their losses were coincidence, and that was literally 2 people, one of whom later found out she had MTHFR mutation). I myself did it twice. You are STILL taking it in your prenatal. It is fine to go a little faster than you're thinking of it.

Thanks again. I'm going to chill out and stop over thinking it. I'll do it over 3 weeks. I read about the asthma and autism thing too.
