    Great meat substitutes!

Through trial and error, I have found some great vegetarian/vegan meat substitutes for when the meat cravings strike! Quorn chik'n nuggets are delicious when baked as directed and I've covered them in Frank's Red Hot Buffalo sauce to satisfy a buffalo wing craving. Morningstar bacon is also incredible when fried in a little margarine and makes a delicious BLT. Anyone else have anything to share?

    Sounds really good!
Here in the UK, you can get Quorn meat substitutes. I have made a bolognese sauce with their mince and it tasted good.
I have tried fake sausages but it tasted like cardboard !
It seems that you can get more variety in the US.

Quorn is basically pure protein mind you, so not best, sorry! I started to really enjoy the veggie lifestyle, and still do lots of pure vegetable meals. Curry using Aubergine, courgette and peppers makes a lovely fresh meal. I used to add chick peas for the kids and hubbie as a protein source for them.

LOL, I was super low on protein consistently (like 25 grams or under!) before I started the meat substitutes, so I needed them. I know a lot of ladies are avoiding soy entirely, and Quorn is soy-free.

Part of my problem with vegetarian food is that I HATE mushrooms, which most people seem to love and take as a perk of eating veggie. Sigh. Some of us are carnivores to the core, and it makes sense that I have conceived 3 boys! I'm also posting this not as a suggestion for daily consumption, but as a veggie substitute to satisfy a craving without cheating.

I DO like Lightlife Gimme Lean sausage substitute (once again, fried in a little oil or margarine) for my pizza topping, laVieEnRose. I found that preparing these vegetarian substitutes the way it says on the package is crucial to getting the texture right.

Great tips, will reiterate that you do still need to monitor protein intake with these!

I like the Asian veggie patties from Morningstar Farm.

I know you said you don't like mushrooms but I love using a big portobello in place of a hamburger patty! So good....

Yeah, so many people think of mushrooms as the most delicious part of vegetarian cooking. Not I! I find both the texture and the flavor horrid. It's really not a great aversion to have while dieting LE

I know what you mean! I hate mushrooms too, it would've made things a bit easier when I was on the LE diet if I liked them. However there are so many other yummy veggies, I didn't feel too hard done by. I loved butternut squash risotto with cranberry Wensleydale cheese & cranberry sauce on the top. It was probably my favourite LE meal.

That sounds amazing! Can you PM me the recipe, or is it something you buy already made?

I can't stand mushrooms either! The fact Quorn is a kind of fungus purpts me off it too lol!
