Digit Ratio 2D:4D and gender sway

    Hi there

Sorry if there is already something about this on the forum somewhere - I had a good search and couldn't locate anything.

I saw a study which found that both mother and fathers digit ratio (ratio of the length of index finger to ring finger) correlates negatively to a higher male birth rate. So basically the lower your digit ratio is (the longer your ring finger relative to your index finger) the more likely you are to have a boy and visa versa. This is hypothesized to occur because a lower digit ratio which is referred to as 'masculine' digit ratio, has been shown to indicate higher male hormones at time of birth.

I know this is not really something we can control, but it might give an idea of how 'hard' someone might have to sway if they are predisposed one way or the other. Wondering if anybody knows anything more about this stuff or has any comments???

The study was '2nd to 4th Digit Ratio and Offspring Sex Ratio' by Manning, Martin, Trivers and Soler.

BTW, I apparently have a 'masculine' digit ratio, which if there is any truth to this will potentially help with my sway!

There's also at least one study that did not find this link and another pretty good metaanalysis that seemed to indicate it was circulating sex hormones as an adult altering digit ratio and not necessarily prenatal exposure - meaning that it is probably what we DO that is swaying and not who we are, if that makes any sense. This is a bit of a "sexy" topic right now (the finger digit ratio) with lots of study going into it and so I hope to know more in a couple years (not that that does us any good now LOL)

It is one of those things that there may be something there, but I DO NOT want to see people start measuring their fingers and having false hope/false despair over it. NO measuring fingers allowed! You have to have training to know how to do it right and I can see totally different measurements depending on how I hold my hands.

Haha! I was counting on you to know a bit more about it Atomic!

I guess it is more of a 'watch this space' element at the moment then. It will be interesting to see if there is anything to it.
