Interesting, thanks for sharing! This was in blood cells specifically, but since sperm cells are constantly dividing it stands to reason tthat this could be one huge reason why smoking sways pink.
This totally fits in what I see with the Custom Plans where the majority of couples wanting boys have the DH smoking (and the vast majority of those who got opposites, did), whereas only a few couple who want girls have ever had DH smoking.!!! I think it's probably the nicotine, tar, other toxins in tobacco/cigs, and the carcinogens generated by burning (smoke etc). Nicotine itself is quite toxic so I'm sure that plays a significant role in decreasing fertility, but I think full-on smoking is definitely worse/sways more. But since it's so damn unhealthy to smoke, I think chewing nicotine gum is an excellent compromise of health/safety and pink swaying. If my pink sway fails, I will consider adding nicotine gum to my next sway as long as I'm not BFing. I would never, ever consider smoking but short term nicotine gum use isn't a huge deal at all IMO.

My Ovulation Chart currently TTC, Cycle #16 since last BFP
TTC #1- swaying pink on & off since Nov 2013 - hoping for a girl first but excited for either!
Dec 2001 - May 2006 : 5 early abortions of healthy singletons (3 medical @5w, 2 surgical @8w, last 4 pregnancies conceived with late DH, all conceived while TTA/on birth control)
Mar 2012: miscarried B/G twins @5w (conceived 2 cycles after remověng Paraguard copper IUD while NTNP), one twin was ovarian ectopic
Me: 34, widowed, late O + short LP, normal-good hormone levels excepting undetectable testosterone, seeking a known sperm donor/life partner
My sway: vegetarian LE for over 28w, skipping breakfast, fibre (ground psyllium husks) with/before/between meals, physically inactive, drama avoidance, ocassional minimal YesBaby lube as needed, alternate cycles on low dose Clomid, double shot lattes (with meals)
Past sway tactics I've dropped (in order): Vitex, Sudafed, antihistamines, intermittent fasting, one attempt per cycle at positive OPK, one attempt in fertile period

Wow, this is so interesting. Thanks for sharing. I hope my DP stops smoking! I do worry about his health. He has had 6 sons though and is 42 but his doctor did an all over health check not so long ago and said he looks like a 25 year old! (meaning his health stats not looks). He started smoking late compared to most though (22-23) so perhaps it had not had enough time to effect him or maybe he is just super lucky and healthy. But he could be healthier, and he has lots of kids he needs to stick around for.

I have three girls and my dh smoked for most of the time that we conceived our dd's. He quit about 5 is years ago. My father was a pack or more a day and had 4 boys and 4 girls. My sister in laws husband doesn't smoke and has 4 girls. But I agree it could have some effect with their fertility.

I have never said that smoking is the only way to get a girl, giz. In fact that would be impossible because people got girls before they started smoking a few hundred years ago.
all we can do is look at overall trends and try to extrapolate. And with my custom swayers for blue, there are WAY more smokers in the TTC a boy gang and barely any in the TTC a girl. This meshes with some other studies that also found altered gender ratio in smokers.!!! Questions??Check out the NEW and improved Complete Index !!!
