Thread: Folate question

    Folate question

I think I probably unnecessarily freaked myself out but here goes. I just read some things about how folic acid is not good for some women and folate is far superior. I know you recommend folate vs folic acid. What I was reading was saying that for some women it’s not just less ideal but it can be harmful.
I was taking 1000mg of folate during my sway. Now that I got my BFP I added a prenatal that has 800mg folic acid. Do you think I should search out a prenatal that has folate instead? Or perhaps do a multivitamin with the folate?
    Thanks

Most people can take either folic acid or folate. Folate can be used by everyone, folic acid is fine to be used by the majority of people but a small % can't take folic acid because it could harm them or a pregnancy.

To be on the safest side, sure, if you can afford it, you can take just folate but most people are fine taking folic acid. People who can't process folic acid actually have to avoid it even in fortified foods - so if you have reason to believe you're in the minority of people who can't do FA, you'd need to avoid not only prenatals with FA but also things like bread, pasta, etc that is fortified with FA.
