This is possible but is obviouly isn't the norm by any means - sometimes people will have a couple days of flow of something called "serous fluid" which is the clear component of blood, before AF begins. It may still be classed by your body as AF flow though even though the red portion of the lining doesn't start to come off for a couple days after that. the lining can start to regrow even as the old lining comes off, so if a person had a couple days of fluid, then bled for a few days after that they may have been misled into thinking they were earlier in the cycle than they really were and could get pg even on what appeared to be CD 5-6 range.

Though for me I wouldn't want my AF to start getting lighter. I would worry that there was something wrong with my lining then!! As it is my current AF pattern of 2 heavy days, then 2 medium days then 1-2 days of light/spotting is already a lot lighter than when I was much younger. I used to have AF for a week!
It was much more "normal" in length before I had my first - 5 and even up to 7 days sometimes. (no fun either LOL) I do get the question several times a week people panicking that their cycle is only 2-3 days but there is nothing wrong with the lining, you can get pg with a really short AF! I got my daughter the month following two super light AFs that were only like one day of flow and then a bit of spotting.
I get that question several times a week

When is it ideal to start using OPKs? I assumed starting CD 8 and forward but now I'm double guessing myself.

Yes I think that's a fine time to start. Most people will be able to see negative fading into positive.
