My doc's nurse just called me and said that my urine culture for Group B Strep came back positive and he would like to treat me with penicillin...WHY NOW!? When my pregnancy is so fragile, I don't know if I am comfortable taking antibiotics. Can somebody help?
I had Group B with DS#2 but they just gave me antibiotics at delivery..for crying out loud!

I've never even heard of them screening for GBS that early, much less treating it. I thought a baby could only contract it through a vaginal birth anyway - you still have 9 months until then! I hope someone with more knowledge has some answers for you.

Babycenter.com is saying the bacteria can come and go and that's why they do it at 35 weeks!
It also said if you test positive it means you are a carrier but that
you or the baby won't necessarily become ill even without proper treatment.
I think I will tell him no when I see him next Tues. I will be 5 weeks then.Last edited by Butterfly Spirit; June 7th, 2012 at 06:18 PM.

I agree with you, I will definitely talk to him next week when I see him. I'd rather not have him pressure me on the phone right now.
I'm so irritated enough, and I won't just do exactly what I'm told from here on, they aren't always right. Doing stuff too early is a BAAD idea, I would have never gone to the hospital when I thought I was miscarrying, just got my blood drawn. There's nothing they can do but painful, invasive, unnecessary things when they can't stop it from happening anyways. Okay rant over.

Butterfly, they don't even test for Group B Strep at ANY point in pregnancy in the UK so they sure as hell can't treat it.... I would definately question the need for antibiotics at this point in pregnancy and what the problem with leaving it is as in my understanding as well it comes and goes all by itself with no treatment. Good luck!
