Clomid - advice on how to get

We are going to be swaying in the new year. I want a girl. My husband has two boys (long sad story) that we parent and we want a girl together.

I will be purchasing a full away plan.

I know that clomid sways so I’d like to get it legitimately from the doctor. I have an appointment Monday where I’m going to get her to do some hormone testing and start a conversation about how I’m concerned about my ovulation patterns and not ovulating.

I’ve seen on this forum that if you ask specifically for clomid doctors can get odd about it. I was going to advise the doctor that I think my ovulation is off and want testing and see how that goes ...

Any advice on how to get the doctor to prescribe it would be greatly appreciated!

Yep, that's the key, do not mention the C word under any circumstances. Go in seeking help with getting pregnant, not asking for medication. Don't mention swaying or wanting a girl (most docs do not know Clomid affects gender ratio anyway)

Just go in there, lay out your concerns, tell them you're getting ready to try to conceive and you're worried that something is amiss. They will either give it to you outright (which actually happens quite a bit) or they may refer you to someone else, or they may require additional testing. If you don't want to go to the testing or to the specialist, that's fine, just say "thank you" and take the referall and then don't go to the appointment. if they ever ask you why - which they rarely do - you could always just say something came up and you guys decided to try normally for a while before seeking additional intervention. That's a common thing that happens all the time, docs are completely used to that!

And if they don't offer you the Clomid, then you're no worse off than you were before, and just say "ok thanks" and go about your business. Don't ask for it at that point either, because they are super weird about that! (thanks to the women who abused Clomid trying to have twins, unfortunately)

Thanks so much atomic. I’ve been practicing what to say. I’ve also done some research regarding doctors versus specialists prescribing it in Australia and apparently it is more the specialist in Australia. Not really a general doctor type thing. I also read they will want to send you for tests. I have a history of ovarian cysts (not PCOS), which also puts me in the higher risk category. I just don’t get a vibe she will prescribe it ...

I have an unrelated doc appointment this week. I will mention casually during that appointment that we are TTC and things seem off. I’ll see how it goes and her reaction. If she seems awkward about it I’ll stop the conversation return to the reason for the appointment and say I’ll come to her again in a few months. At least I will know where I stand then ...

People do get it from their GP in Australia too though. It really just depends on the doc you go to.

I think that's a great idea - just float the idea that something seems off, and then be willing to retreat if it doesn't go the way you hoped.

Thanks atomic! Where are these magical GPs. Really hoping the doctor ends up being interested in my story and I don’t need to retreat ...

Just wanted to update in case anyone else finds this helpful in the future.

I went to the doctor about an unrelated issue and didn’t mention my fertility being off because my doctor had a trainee doctor in the room randomly. She was explaining everything she said/doing to him - I just knew I couldn’t mention something being “off” with fertility as she would have used it as a training opportunity. However, in discussing my thyroid she kept asking about periods and overall health - literally asked about periods 4
times. I think I’ve set it up nicely to mention next time periods/fertility feeling off. So my ultimate lesson is that maybe being slow is what I need to win the race - by putting a few things together in her notes after a few visits I’m sure I may be able to be a bit more forthright with the fertility discussion.

YES!!! You often have to plant the seed of an idea with doctors (even not for Clomid, just generally) so they are convinced there's really something going on over time and that you're not there on a whim. Good luck!

Here’s hoping I get it! I went in for thyroid issues - I’ve had weight gain and SO tired. Three women in my family have hypothyroidism and it came on when they were a bit older (hashimotos) so I think my body has finally succumbed. I didn’t realise until I was googling tonight that hypothyroidism can impact ovulation and fertility. This could all work out for me - a diagnosis for my weight gain and feeling tired and a reason for clomid.

yes it absolutely can and even if it's suboptimal can contribute to miscarriage so it needs to be thoroughly checked out!
