    Clomid

I am wondering what the risk is of having multiples on clomid taken for swaying when you ovulate normally?

I have been trying to get pregnant for the last couple of years but haven't been successful because of my age (almost 44). I have one round of clomid that I could try, not sure it would help anyway. But on the other hand I only really want one baby, not twins or more!

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in... But I believe you are less likely to have multiples if you ovulate normally. I also think atomic said it's not recommended to take clomid if you're over 35. I can't remember the reason. I was seriously thinking of trying to find some but I'm 39 and I don't want to mess up my chances of getting pregnant at all. I'm sure she'll respond and let you know the details!

Thanks, I've had my FSH done and it's only 5, so I think it would be ok at my age.

Yes that's right, while it seems counterintuitive you actually have less chance of having multiples on Clomid if you are ovulating on your own (because this means you probably don't have PCOS, and it's PCOS plus Clomid that is most likely to create multiples.)

I do generally recommend Clomid for only those 35 and under, with 35-38 or so being at your discretion if your doc has tested your FSH. Clomid can raise FSH high and this will then wreck egg quality, and your egg quality will already not be great due to age. But it doesn't affect everyone equally and the negative effects accumulate over time (MOST people but not all of them will be ok for the first month) so at 43 you probably don't have anything to lose by trying a month of it given that you have already tried a long time on your own and were not able to conceive.

Are you doing or taking anything else that may be cutting odds of conception?

That's not really how it works unfortunately, even if you have had in the past good FSH numbers the Clomid can still make them go up really fast. Like I've seen people go from normal FSH to 30 from Clomid. But as I said, it may be at this point you have nothing to lose and are willing to take the chance. The rise in FSH is not permanent and will return to normal after stopping the Clomid.

That's good to know, thank you.

I agree I don't think I have anything to lose, I have almost given up really. My blood tests are all normal and I ovulate regularly, but I haven't even had a chemical pregnancy in over 2 years.

Don't think I'm doing anything to cut conception, I'm taking naturelo pre natal, alpha-lipoid acid (600mg), ubiquinol (100mg), omega-3 (500mg), and inositol (500mg) as I have some PCOS symptoms but have regular periods.

I try and have sex the day before and the day of ovulation, not sure what else I can do?

    Let's up ubiquinol to 300 a day.

    What is your BMI?

Can you tell me more about how you're determining ovulation?? I would have you guys instead have sex every 72 hours from your period ending through when you're sure you've ovulated (even if it means going through till when your next period begins) and then add in one more attempt at positive OPK or the day before you expect to O.

Sex on O Day is really not the best chance of conception.

    Ok thanks

My BMI is 24.7, so on the border of healthy/overweight

I'm assuming I ovulate the day after my ovulation strips (one step) turn dark. Peak cervical mucus is the day the strip turns dark but my luteal phase is 16-17 days so I guess ovulation could be later than I think.

Yes. If your LP is 16-17 days after you think you ovulated you've been missing ovulation entirely!! No wonder you aren't getting pregnant

Please start doing e4d method right away (unprotected sex every 72 hours starting after your period ends and continuing on till you're sure you've ovulated even if that means going on till your next period begins.

THen in addition to that, have sex on the day of your positive OPK too.
