If IUI sways blue and Femara sways pink...

    Hi All,

I'm new to posting here (although have been lurking since last Fall) and can't seem to find a definite answer to this anywhere. (I hope this is the right forum for this question - sorry if it's not!)

So DH and I have been trying to conceive for almost a year now. I got pregnant after 2 months of trying but it was a chemical and haven't been able to get pregnant since. We started seeing a RE and are moving on to IUI + Femara + Ovidrel. I've read that IUI sways "slightly" blue and Femara sways pink. Would this mean that IUI with Femara is considered neutral (do they cancel each other out?) Are my odds of conceiving either gender 50/50 with this plan or does one sort of "overpower" the other and tip the scale in either direction?

I've been trying to sway pink, but at this point would be happy either way! I just want a sticky bean!

    TIA!

    Hi and welcome!

We honestly do not know about the combo of IUI + Femara and it is very very likely that it would be different for each couple anyway, since there are likely more than one mechanism that affect a baby's gender. For example if you have a Male Factor Infertility issue, which tends to sway pink, the IUI may not sway so blue as it would for a different couple. And if you have high estrogen yourself (which may sway blue) the Femara may matter more. Just not something I can tell anyone.

What I do know is that if your RE tells you it is time to do IUI + Femara then I would ask nicely "can I do just Femara with timed intercourse" and if they say "no you need the IUI" then go right ahead and do it. Plenty of people have gotten girls with IUI and boys with Femara so it's just really not anything to change your plans over, that's for sure.

Good luck and sending you tons of sticky baby dust, preferably pink!

    Thanks for your reply, atomic!

I actually have been doing Femara with timed intercourse for the last two cycles. BFN both months. DH and I feel ready to move on to the next step - I'm turning 35 soon and we've had so many BFNs at this point even with medicated cycles.

Also, we don't seem to have Male Factor issues as DH's SA came back normal. My estrogen level came back on the low side - 17.8 from Day 3 blood tests. Kinda funny that those two bits of information seem like they could cancel each other out too! After everything I learned about swaying in the last year it's crazy to me that I'm in a situation where conceiving either gender seems to be close to 50/50 anyway. I guess you can't fight nature sometimes.

That's what I figured but lately we've had several aggressive RE's want to go right to IUI so thought I better mention it.

A lot of this is speculation but I think you should just go in expecting 50-50, always mentally healthiest to do that! Good luck and pink dust headed your way.

Just thought I'd pop back in here to give anyone who might be reading this thread and curious about the same thing an update. After 3 failed IUIs, we are moving on to IVF. This particular conundrum turned out to be moot for my situation!
