Unexpected BFP Twins at 43
Some of you may remember me, I did HT for a girl in 2011 and she’s 6 almost 7 now. I had an unexpected pregnancy almost 2 years ago that resulted in miscarriage at 8 weeks. I cannot even fathom that I’m pregnant at 43 almost 44 with twins. 6 weeks.
I need realistic info here. I can’t imagine what the odds of viability are and a twin pregnancy at my age is completely terrifying. Heartbeat of one seen at 5 weeks 6 days, and doc wants me to return for another u/s in 3 days he thought he could see heartbeat if the other but said in just a few days it would be much more clear what’s going on and not to assume badly about either.
What are experiences/facts about this? I’m stunned honestly.

and my HT

My husbands aunt conceived twins at the age of 48. They are now happy, healthy 6 year olds. If I remember correctly, i don’t think they were premature, If they were it wasn’t by much. Those are her only children as well.

Oh of course I remember you lindi! One of my fave early members! I so appreciated (and used) the clothes you sent for Susannah!
While twin pregnancies can be higher risk of course, the odds are that these are fraternal twins (since older women more often hyperovulate and ID twins are rare) and it is identical twins that carry the most risks.
I don't want you to overthink your age here. Many, many of the so called "risks" of advanced maternal age are really due to the fact that women in their forties are also more likely to have health issues to begin with. If you're otherwise in good health, you absolutely CAN have an easy and uncomplicated pregnancy (aside from the twinning). They make it out like pregnancy at 43/44 is always a ticking time bomb but it simply isn't the case and they're going to do everything they can to ensure you're well cared for. Having that prenatal care is going to stave off the preventable issues and they've come so very far in caring for moms in their 40's. And if the twins come a bit early they are absolutely briliant at caring for small babies nowadays.
It's totally possible that you'll go back and see two babies next time. Or it may be that there will be only one, and if that's the case, still try not to worry. It is super common for pregnancies to start off with two and one goes, and yet you can still come out of it with a healthy baby 9 months later! I did! That's obviously not what we're hoping for, we want to see two heartbeats next time, but if G-d forbid we don't, it doesn't mean that the other baby can't make it.
My pregnancy at 42 was my easiest. Now granted it wasn't twins, but I felt great most of the time, had tons of energy, labor was a breeze, and I recovered quickly. My pregnancy in my 40's was easier than my pregnancies in my 20's had been. REmember when they're telling you about "risks" that it's an average across the population including those women who have other health problems! It doesn't necessarily apply to you, not at all. Most pregnancies work out just fine with no complications and there's no reason why you won't fall into the "most" category.
Please keep us posted how you're getting along!
