You need to add a Profile Picture, not an Avatar. Click on settings(top right) and look for the Profile Picture on the left- that is where you should upload it. The Avatar will only show up on your profile. It is just the difference in terminology in the forums.

I just checked and I do have a profile picture, sorry I thought it was an avatar.

I worked it out.
I had added a profile pic and that pic only shows up on my profile page.
I had to add an avatar and now it shows up under my name when I post.
Thanks for the reply I didn't realise there was avatar and profile pic until you mentioned it.
