    Help reading nutritional info

I've always thought that the nutritional info that is on the side of the box or can of food contains everything that is in the food. BUt today, while making those cheapo boxed scalloped potatoes (we love them lol) I noticed that the nutritional info didnt have any info on potassium. Does that mean that the potatoes have no potassium or that the amount is so minute that they didn't include it on the nutritional info? It was also surprisingly low in salt and very low in other nutrients (only high in carbs) so I'm thinking these might be ok for pink sway......

Potassium does not legally have to be listed, so some products list it and some don't. But even though it's not listed, it's still in there! Potatoes and dairy both have large amounts of potassium even though it is not usu listed on the label.

Don't worry, you're not the first one to make that mistake! I'm just reallly happy you mentioned it because I am not sure I had ever brought it up before.

thanks again, do you know of an online tool I can use that will tell me all nutrient levels in food? I think I saw you recommend fitday.com before but just wondering if that is all inclusive? Or if its just like reading a label?

Below are a few sites you might like...I put "apple" in each of the databases to show you what it gives you as an example.

    http://www.newcaloriecounter.com/cal...with_skin.html

    http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/...-juices/1809/2

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/cal...with-skin-9003 - You might have to scroll down to see the info on this one. If you want to log your food just to see how you're doing or make your own recipes and see the nutritional info in them, this is an excellent site. It's free too!

    Hope this helps!

We actually found fitday to be quite unreliable because they seem to be assuming people add massive quantites of salt to everything, even plain rice!!

I like the one OOtB mentioned above - the Self magazine one.

That's the one I've used too, when I'm using something where it's not written on the packet!
