Microsort question
Hi Carole,
i have a question for you on Microsort. I am not sure if you have experience or you might have discussed with your co workers about microsort. but here is my question.
I am using Microsort for my IVF cycle & i will be sorting for XY. My question is , will there be any negative impact on embyos growth when MS sperms are used.
Thanks in advance

Hi Mykids,
Here's a link http://www.microsort.net/faqs/HumRepro.php to a summary of research that one of the labs using Microsort published demonstrating that they could produce normal offspring with this technology. The possible concern with Microsort technology is that sperm are exposed to fluorescent DNA-binding dyes and lasers. Differentially stained sperm are sorted by laser. Microsort technology was first used in the domesticated animal industry and results were acceptable there. With any new technology, you like to see decades of healthy offspring, and long term studies obviously take time.
We are at the relatively early phase of outcome studies in people compared to domestic livestock. That doesn't necessarily mean it is not safe, and early studies are reassuring but the final word won't be in for decades. You probably had to sign some paperwork consenting to the use of an experimental technology. At least one reproductive center decided against using Microsort for gender selection because of concerns they have that animal studies suggest that microsort may result in negative impact on the growth and development of embryos. Here's a link to that site and references to the science papers they discuss http://www.seattleivf.com/gender-selection.html
Is this a problem in humans? The short answer is that outcome data is still being collected. You should probably discuss these concerns with your physician. Best Wishes, Carole
