    PGD and CGH?

    Hi Carole,

Is the microarray PGD the same as CGH?

    Thank you,

Basically yes. Microarray is also called array comparative genome hybridization (a-CGH). This technique can be used in various research applications, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (aka. PGD) is just one application. People often use PGS and PGD interchangeably but they are different. PGD is used to DIAGNOSE (hence the D in PGD) a genetic mutation in a single gene that causes disease. PGS is used to SCREEN for more common problems affecting large pieces of DNA like chromosomes - having the wrong quantity of a particular chromosome (aneuploidy) or if pieces of chromosome are swapped end to end (translocations), these can be picked up by PGS. Gender selection is a kind of PGS, not PGD. More than you asked for I know!

That is interesting, thank you Carole. So technically we should be using the term PGS.
