The town of Lahaina, Maui's second most-visited attraction, combines history with soul. Its museums, art galleries and historic sites all have compelling stories to tell. The town is probably best known for its whaling history, but that's only a small slice of its past. Lahaina is the place where the immigrants first landed in Hawaii and where missionaries first came to press their ideals on the natives. Now, its harbor is bustling with stores, dance halls, souvenir shops, art galleries and watering holes but the town remains faithful to its past. Another highlight in this town is the massive Banyan tree in front of the old courthouse which was planted in 1873 by the town sheriff to commemorate the first Mission.
