Yes in 2014 we just didn't have this all figured out, I wish I did!
Whole grain everything if you can stand it. If you absolutely can't (for example whole grain pasta is pretty ucky) then have white pasta and whole grain bread, or smaller amounts white rice if you can't do brown. It's the white flour that seems to be the worst, and for reasons we don't really understand pasta and white rice are better tolerated. But if you can give them all up, even better.
