35 and TTC - how much folic acid?

So I've read that we should be taking 1200 - 1600mcg on a girl sway.

Howabout if I am 35 too? Should I be taking more?

Is 1600mcg definitely safe? In UK, they suggest 400mcg unless any previous risk factors. I appreciate I won't be getting any folic acid from my diet. I just wanted to check I'm taking enough / not too much.

    Thanks

Oh mine says 500mcg. Maybe I am not taking enough, that'a all I was told to take. Aussie here! I even went to the doctor and asked if I should take more considering my m/c history and he said one was enough. Is there a reason it's so much maybe the diet restriction?
    Hoping for a pink rainbow!

I'm guessing because we won't be getting any from our diet yes.
I'm also a bit concerned about lack of vitamin D, given there is so much out there at the moment of its importance during pregnancy in developing baby's healthy teeth / bones.
I know the diet is no supplements, but I'm tempted to take a vitamin D one - does anyone have any thoughts on this?
    Thanks

I'm taking 3 x 400 tablets each morning as part of my girl sway 1600 is safe but I wanted to stick at 1200 it's a personal choice. 400 is the bare minimum

Hmm, I've been doing a bit of googling and from a quick search, it seems that the body just gets rid of any excess folic acid, so I think I'll increase to 1200 too.

I know that as soon as I get a BFP, I will be eating greens, oily fish, meat, nuts and taking as many vitamins as I can (I'm missing nutritious food so much!)! It just makes me a bit nervous, particularly on the vit D front, that I am depleting myself so much of these.

Ok I guess I will be upping mine to!! Thanks ladies as for the vitamin D what's wrong with getting a bit of sun?? Are we not supposed to be?

Good point! Maybe being in the sun will help!

Unfortunately, the UK is damp, dreary and cloudy, more chance of winning the lottery here than catching some sun!!

Yes, it's safe, and if you have a history of miscarriage or are over 35 you may want to take 2000 mcg. If you have a history of neural tube defects or are super concerned about it, take up to 4000 mcg.

I had a baby with spina bifida despite taking 800 mcg, eating like a pig (not a restricted diet whatsoever) and no familial history. I do not feel that 800 is enough and 400 is FOR SURE not enough when swaying pink.

Because that's what I feel to be the safest amount (see siggie below)
