Nub experts question.....

Hi,

I have been nubsessing and when I look at a nub I see a shadowed bit and the white bit, do we only look at the white bits, or is the shadow bit part of the nub also?

So does the blue arrow pointing to the shadowed bit include in the nub or not, I don't want no gender guesses as I've already done that just curious what the shadowe bits mean in the nub ....
