Can a follicle be too big at egg retrieval?

Hi Dr Wegner! I have read that between 18-20mm is a good size to have a mature egg fertilize but can a follicle be too big? In your experience, is there a size that once a follicle goes over that the chances of fertilization decline an/or the egg is abnormal?

    Thank you!

    Hi Nuthin but pink,
I don't know that there is an absolute maximum size that is too big- clinics create their guidelines as they gain experience with a particular stimulation protocol. When a group of follicles is coming along, sometimes one follicle gets ahead of the rest and may reach 25-28 mm size. This one may be sacrificed --allowed to get post mature-- to allow the rest of the group to catch up so that the doctor can retrieve more that have reached that "sweet spot" where they are mature but not over-mature. Physicians and clinics use their own experience to determine which follicles are "too small", "too big" or "just right". I would encourage patients to ask their physician or clinics what their guidelines are. Best Wishes, Carole
