    Does spironolactone sway?

I started taking spironolactone this year for acne. It has helped immensely, and I plan on staying on it while TTC (will stop at O). I have two boys and was not on this medication while they were conceived, so I'm wondering if this will have any affect? Thanks!

I used to take spiro many years ago! I'm not sure about the answer, but doesn't it block T, so that would make sense??

I will add that I think spiro is messing up my cycle. I'm normally very regular, but haven't had regular periods since starting the medication. So even if spiro does sway, it's not going to do anything if I'm not ovulating to begin with. I may decrease my dose a bit and see if that helps. We aren't planning to TTC until this summer, so I have some time to figure it out.

It is thought to possibly cause problems for a baby because it blocks testosterone which both baby girls and baby boys need access to for healthy development. So, at least in my albeit limited understanding, you'd want to stop taking it before you might get pregnant which would likely negate any girl sway effect it may have otherwise had.

Animal studies have shown damage at the highest maximum human dose (200 mg), but there's no evidence of harm in humans. I'm on 75 mg. My doctor advised stopping at O, and since I'm temping I can be pretty sure of when that happens. The risk to male fetuses is greater, and being that I seem to be more likely to conceive boys, I may stop the medication before we TTC.

Yes, it's believed to sway pink, but you need to talk to a doctor and/or pharmacist about when to come off it. Most recommendations are 6 weeks before you may be pregnant, not at ovulation!!!

ok sorry did not read whole thread first before answering.

If you're in touch with your doc about this, excellent. You would not believe the number of people who show up on here having read somewhere "low T sways pink" and have procured spiro and take it on their own with no medical advice. Just like to err on side of caution since I'm not a doctor and cannot give anyone medical advice.

I would definitely not do that! I plan on checking with my OB (rather than just my derm) before I get my IUD removed so I can do what's safest for the baby.
