Is rephresh and abstinence overkill at 40?

Hi DH has been away for 10 days and hasn't "released" on his own. I am due to ovulate tonight or tomorrow so basically it's a one shot attempt when he arrives home tonight! I was going to use rephresh for the first time this month and was wondering if it would hinder our only attempt after 10 days abstinence and with DH and I being 40?

If anyone thinks it would be ok to use, when should I use it? Would it be today and then again tonight after BD and then again tomorrow?

I have read so much on here about rephresh, however I'm just unsure if it would be overkill this particular month and I should wait until next cycle.

    Thanks for any replies!

Well I think AS recommends frequent release over abstinence for your dh's age because of the risk of unhealthy/damaged sperm. You may want to ask her though. If you did use rephresh are you going to use an entire applicator or just fingertip? If you use the entire applicator then you would only use it once as it lasts three days.

Well, could be chance but my DH abstained for 10 days the last 2 cycles and BFN's. I did not use Rephresh as my pH is lower without it. We were planning abstinence again this month but my cycle got all messed up (first time ever) and so we abstained for 8 days but then dtd when I had a +OPK. Turned out to be a false + as it is 5 days later and I still have not O'd. So we switched to double releases - one by DH on his own and then one bd...

I think it depends how fertile you are... how fast you conceived before

For some, no matter what they do they're so fertile they'll get a BFP with one attempt and a strong sway first month! Others... might need to sway less.

If you're not in a rush there's no harm in trying it this cycle?

I would prob. go for it in your situation, but as a general rule, I do not advise men over 35 to do abstain due to a slightly increased risk of birth defects.

I would prob use a small amount of RepHresh (1/2-1/4 applicator), just the night before or morning before your BD attempt. 8-12 hours before your attempt will give it time to spread thru the VJ and then the excess will come out (which is fine.) Do not use it after attempt and then there's no point the next day, the sperm are already long gone by then.

Thanks for all the replies ladies! After starting out ttc a girl journey 5 months ago I stumbled upon this site and have never left and that's due to all the support we receive here. I have also come to learn that timing really means nothing and it's many other factors that help our sway attempts. I wouldn't have abstained 10 days this cycle if DH wasn't away as I agree with atomic in regards to the increase in affected sperm. I know that after 10 days abstinence at 40 it is HIGHLY unlikely we caught the egg this month.....but a girls gotta try right...lol!

Thnaks again for the advice on using rephresh.

Atomic, what is the minimum amount of time you'd recommend between inserting the RepHresh and DTD? On my current RepHresh "schedule," I'm supposed to use it the evening of cycle day 13. If I O on cycle day 15, as is the most likely, that means we would BD the morning of cycle day 14, if that's when I get my first peak on the Clearblue Easy fertility monitor (so perhaps eight hours or so after the RepHresh). Is that too short an interval between using RepHresh and bringing the "swimmers" onto the scene? Should I use the RepHresh earlier in the day, rather than right before bedtime?

8-12 hours. This gives it enough time to permeate throughout the VJ, and for the excess to be wiped away, and will allow sperm at least a shot of survival.
