I haven't been there, but a family I grew up with adopted 2 kids from there and visits from time to time. They love it, and have spent a lot of time in central/south America. I guess it depends on what kind of lifestyle you want--and if you speak Spanish?

Thanks! I can't say I trust the advisory boards at all. They usually go overboard on the dangers when it isn't that bad, so I'd prefer to talk to people that live or have lived there
H- we don't speak any Spanish, just French, but I've moved all over the world and learning a new language is really exciting to me so it wouldn't put me off. The culture and living conditions would be something to get used to but we're already the kind of people that make do with very little when need beCrunchy Mama to 3 rambunctious boys~'06 :bike: '08

Guatemala city isn't much to rave about, quite high crime rate, but other parts of the country are gorgeous. There are lots of quite traditional villages in the highlands that are fascinating and some gorgeous natural beauty. Would he have to be based in Guatemala city?

YeahHe would. This is one part that is totally putting me off. I guess he could drive in and out of the city but from the looks of it, traffic is terrible, and it would take him forever to get home. I think the neighboring towns are close to an hour away. Thanks so much for your response WAD
I've heard it's just beautiful there
