Twins- are you pregnant with them?
I wasnt sure where to post this, but I had a doctors appt yesterday and I was discussing how since I had taken a pregnancy test only 2 days after the day my period was due. It was very dark, to me indicating high levels of HPK possibly and that could mean twins. I was getting my blood pressure taken and Im sure it shot up when she replied "Well, youre 34 now, and the chances go up as you get older, even if you dont have any family history." I honestly didnt know that. How many mamas here are around my age and pregnant with multiples w/o fertility drugs or family history?
I wont know for a bit, as they are sending me to a hospital for an in depth ultrasound and blood testing for genetic issues, since I am the mother of two special needs children already. I thought they were going to do one there, but I guess things have changed since my last baby 6 years ago. We did hear the heart beat of at least one, but Im a tad early so we lucked out.Jacob 9/17/2010

You can't tell if you are having twins based on if your test is dark. It's not at all unusual to have super dark tests 2 days after a missed period with a singleton.
While the odds of twinning do go up with age, 34 is not exactly the age I'd be on the lookout for twins. And even if you were 40 and up, the odds are still not very high.
Just to reassure you, if I had a nickel for the number of times people have asked me about darkness of pregnancy test, age, etc in terms of twinning and had only one baby I'd be rich! Don't overthink this, it is by far and away the most likely that it's just one baby. Twins are always possible, but trust me you'll have time to worry about it if you're really having twins.!!! I'm pregnant with twins and am 34, BUT, I took Clomid so that was the likely culprit
I got a BFP at 8 dpo that turned dark VERY quickly and by 4 weeks exactly my HCG was 967. From all my reading/obsessing about HCG levels and twins before I had my first ultrasound I learned that there is HUGE variation with HCG with both singletons and twins... You can have a very high HCG level and be carrying a singleton or a low/normal HCG level and be carrying twins! It's impossible to tell before you have an ultrasound. Before she did my first ultrasound, my doctor didn't even think - after 3 HCG draws that showed high levels - that I was having twins because she said she says high HCG levels with singletons all the time (and she's a fertility specialist!). At 34 with no fertility drugs and no family history I think the chances are good you're carrying one baby!
I don't know how long your normal LP is but as atomic said getting a dark HPT 2 days after your period is due is not strange at all!
Congrats on the pregnancy!!20132015

Phew, makes me feel much better! Doesnt help that I havent had an ultrasound yet and Im around 11 weeks today. (I got a late start at the docs too because we were mid move and end of school year) I do have an appt set up for next Monday at a hospital that has pretty high tech equipment that they referred me to. (Not even the one they deliver babies at) so I guess being an older special needs mother caused that? Althought I dont think if you have ASD children, it increases your risk for any genetic problems.

What about morning sickness being worse? Can that indicate twins? I am seriously hoping not but this is my 5th pregnancy and by far the worst all day sickness I've ever had. Am currently taking medication for it but still have the nausea.

No it wasn’t worse. I did have morning sickness this time but I had it with my two singleton pregnancies as well (both boys) and so it wasn’t really different. I had a lot of nausea this time but less vomiting than my prior pregnancies. I have had a lot more fatigue this time around though!

I had HG on #1 and #2 but not #3 (all boys). I'm currently 18 weeks with twins and the sickness wouldn't have been HG levels, though close. It's lasted a bit longer but no worse than my first two pregnancies. The main difference this time to my first 3 pregnancies has been food aversion. From weeks 7-9 I gagged every time I tried to swallow food unless it was food I really really wanted. And those foods were hard to come by as my sense of smell was way more sensitive this time than previously!
